Bound Husk Drop Appliqué

A bound sheaf, carved in flowing relief. This is a classic decorative appliqué: a bundle of husk-like fronds cinched at the waist by a smooth wrapping band. Above the band, plump rounded reeds fan upward and outward like fingers of a stylised palmette; below it, the same forms twist and swirl into a fluted, tassel-like drop that flares at the base. The carving is deep and confidently modelled, all soft ridges and shadowed valleys, in the ornamental language of Georgian and Victorian furniture and joinery. It's a one-piece raised relief meant to be applied to a flat surface. Woodworkers and restorers will recognise it as a drop or husk ornament for cabinet doors, fireplace surrounds, bed heads, mirror and picture frames, newel posts or a decorative onlay on a panelled door. Making notes: • This is a natural CNC 3D-relief carve: rough out the mass with a flat or bullnose bit, then finish the flutes, reeds and the crisp central band with a tapered ballnose for smooth valleys. • Choose a tight, even-grained hardwood — oak, walnut, cherry or lime/basswood — so the fine reeding doesn't tear out; carve along the grain where you can. • Leave a flat back for gluing, and keep the relief depth sensible so the band doesn't become a thin, fragile ridge. • Equally printable in resin or FDM as a paint-and-gild onlay if you're faking carved timber.
