Description

A plump scallop shell fans open above a pair of outward-curling scrolls. This is a classic shell-and-scroll onlay: a tall central lobe rises at the crown, flanked by progressively shorter rounded ribs that radiate out like the pleats of a fan. Beneath them a cluster of small beads sits between two S-scrolls that sweep down and roll outward, grounding the composition. The relief is soft and generous, every lobe swelling smoothly before dipping into a shadowed flute -- a timeless Georgian and Rococo cabinet motif that has decorated fine furniture for centuries. It is made to dress the centre of a cabinet door, a drawer front, a mantel or a mirror crest, adding a hand-carved flourish to plain joinery. Mounted above a doorway or on a headboard, it lends instant period character. Print notes: • Single-sided relief -- machine straight into hardwood or print and glue onto the workpiece. • Keep the flat back true for a clean glue joint; clamp evenly while it sets. • A ball-nose finishing pass gives the soft rounded lobes their sheen; take light passes on the fine scroll tips. • Sand along the flutes, then rub gilt cream or dark wax into the recesses so the ridges catch the light.
