Carved Scroll Volute Onlay

A single sweeping curl of carved timber that turns a flat surface into something that flows. This CNC relief captures a classic scroll volute: one long, gently tapering arm that swoops down and coils into a tight double spiral, like the head of a violin or the frond of an unfurling fern. The surface is smoothly rounded rather than sharply faceted, so raking light rolls along the arm and pools inside the curl, giving the piece real depth even at a shallow cut. It reads as a decorative onlay: the kind of ornament you glue or pin onto furniture, a mantel, a mirror frame, a stair bracket or the apron of a cabinet. Cabinetmakers and restorers reach for shapes like this to soften a hard corner or add a hand-carved flourish to a plain panel. Because it mirrors cleanly, a facing pair can bookend a doorway or crown a headboard. Print notes: • Cut single-sided as a 3D relief; a roughing pass with a large end mill followed by a 6mm or 8mm ball-nose finishing pass keeps the curved surfaces clean. • Close-grained hardwoods (oak, walnut, cherry, tulipwood) or dense modelling board hold the tight spiral without tear-out. • Run the grain along the length of the arm so the fragile inner scroll stays strong. • To 3D print instead, lay it face-up and add light supports only under the deepest undercuts of the coil.
