Domed Boss Scroll Onlay

A slender vertical ornament built around a single domed eye of wood. This onlay is strictly symmetrical, top to bottom and side to side. At its heart sits a raised oval boss — smooth and pillow-domed — cradled inside a flat elliptical plate and flanked by four small round beads at the compass points. Above and below, the plate narrows into paired ribbon scrolls that curl back on themselves and finish in slim, leaf-tipped finials, like the ends of a wrought bracket. It's restrained Victorian-meets-Baroque cabinetmaker's decoration, meant to be seen from across a room. Glued onto a flat surface it dresses up a door panel, a headboard, a cabinet front, a clock case or a mirror surround, instantly lifting a plain field into something considered. Cut notes • A natural for CNC relief in MDF or a tight-grained hardwood; the domed boss wants a ball-nose finishing pass to keep it glassy. • Keep the finial tips slightly thickened at the model stage so they survive machining and handling. • Machine the piece proud on a waste board, then part it free and sand the back flat for a seamless glue-up. • Prints just as well flat-on-the-bed in resin or fine-layer FDM if you'd rather apply it as a lightweight appliqué. Finish to match your carcase — stained, gilded or painted — and it disappears into the furniture as if it were always carved there.
