Description

A clean, low-slung tray blank shown edge-on so you can read its profile. From this side view the piece is a long, shallow dish: a flat central field that lifts at each end into softly rounded, slightly raised lips, the whole thing rolled over with a gentle bullnose edge. It's the kind of understated rounded-rectangle platter that suits a modern table as easily as a rustic one. Think serving board, bread or fruit tray, an entryway catch-all for keys and coins, a desk valet, or a base to stage candles and a vase. Because the top face reads as an open field from this angle, it also makes an ideal canvas for your own engraved monogram, name or pattern before finishing. Cut notes: • Pocket out the shallow recess with a flat end mill, then soften the rim and outer edge with a round-over or bullnose bit for that pillowed profile. • A single stable hardwood board keeps it from cupping; walnut, oak and maple all machine cleanly. • Sand up through the grits and seal with a food-safe oil or hardwax if it'll ever hold food. • Leave a couple of millimetres of stock beneath the pocket so the tray stays rigid and doesn't flex.
