Description

A scallop caught mid-bloom, carved in wood. This decorative rosette radiates a fan of plump, rounded flutes from an off-centre core, giving it the look of a seashell crossed with an opening flower. Along the lower edge two tight volute scrolls curl inward beneath a raised keystone loop, anchoring the sunburst with a touch of baroque flourish. The relief is soft and hand-modelled, each flute swelling and tapering so light rolls gently across the surface. This is the kind of applied ornament cabinetmakers reach for to lift a plain drawer front, a mirror crest, a bedpost or the centre of a cupboard door. Sized down it becomes a jewellery-box medallion; scaled up it caps a mantel or a headboard. Machining notes: • It is a shallow single-sided relief — rough with a ball-nose bit, then finish with a fine tapered ball for the crisp flute valleys. • A close-grained hardwood such as maple, cherry or lime carves cleanest and takes stain evenly. • Machine it in one flat setup, leaving a small onlay border you can trim afterwards, then hand-sand the flute ridges before mounting. • It also casts well in resin from a machined master if you need a run of matching pieces.
