Description

A classical fluted urn crowned with a spray of palm leaves, carved as an ornate applique. The relief centres on a footed trophy vase with a ribbed, gadrooned belly and a pair of bold S-scroll handles curling out to each side, each finished with a little rolled volute and ball. Rising from the mouth of the urn is a symmetrical fan of long, veined palm or laurel fronds, spreading out and up like a formal bouquet frozen in wood. The composition is tall and vertical, raised smoothly off a plain recessed background so it can be applied to a flat surface as a single decorative motif. This is the kind of ornament that dresses a fireplace overmantel, a cabinet door, a headboard panel or a mirror crest, bringing a neoclassical, stately feel to furniture and joinery. Print notes: • Machine as a shallow-to-medium relief; rough with a ballnose, then detail the frond veins and the fluting on the urn body with a fine tapered bit (around 1mm). • A tight, even-grained hardwood such as beech, maple or lime carves the crisp scrolls without tear-out. • Keep the stock flat-clamped and leave a thin border tab you trim after the finishing pass, then sand the background smooth so the raised motif stands proud. • To 3D print it instead, lay it face-up flat on the bed; the gentle relief needs no supports and takes gilding wax or a dark glaze beautifully to accent the recesses.
