Spiralling Acanthus Scroll Roundel

A swirl of carved leaves chasing its own tail. D 598 is a circular scroll ornament — a roundel built from interlocking acanthus C-scrolls that spiral around a hollow centre, each leafy volute curling into the next so the whole piece seems to rotate. Big fronds fan out at the top and left, a bold spiral coils on the right, and down at the lower edge a small pleated shell fan sits above a cluster of carved berries. It's a corner-piece or medallion with lovely depth and movement, all rolling ridges and deep undercut hollows. This suits cabinet and door builders, mirror and picture-frame makers, and anyone wanting an ornate rosette to anchor a corner or centre a panel. Carve it in a warm hardwood for a heritage look, or in MDF for a paint-and-gild finish. Cut notes: • One-sided relief on a flat blank — the open centre and undercuts call for a small tapered ballnose (1.5–2mm) on the finish pass to reach down into the scroll cores. • Rough with a 6mm ballnose and leave plenty of stock; the thin leaf tips tear easily. • There's no single grain-friendly axis on a roundel, so seal the timber well and take gentle finishing passes to limit chip-out on the cross-grain scrolls. • The flat back glues and clamps straight onto the workpiece.
