Celtic Knotwork Illuminated Initial Panel

A tangle of Celtic ribbons wound into the shape of a single bold letter. This panel is a mass of interlaced knotwork — thin, sinewy strands that loop, cross, and thread through one another in the endless-knot tradition, some tips flaring into little leaf and beast hints. The dense tracery packs into a blocky form with a clear open rectangular notch cut out on the right, so the overall silhouette reads as an illuminated capital, somewhere between an "E" and a "C" from a medieval manuscript. The strands are raised and rounded against a recessed background, so a raking light throws the whole weave into crisp relief. This is a great fit for a personalised initial over a doorway, a study or library wall, a Norse- or Celtic-themed room, or a backlit fretwork piece where the open areas glow through. In dark oak it feels ancient; painted metallic against black it looks like a page from the Book of Kells lifted into three dimensions. Print / cut notes • The strand crossings are the challenge: on CNC use a small bit and take shallow passes so the over-and-under weave stays clean. • If cutting all the way through as fretwork, secure the workpiece well — there is a lot of fragile open tracery. • For 3D printing, lay it flat, face-up, no supports; a fine layer height keeps the ribbons smooth. • Sand the raised strands lightly before finishing so highlights pop along the weave. Scale to suit an initial plaque or a larger decorative wall panel.
