Blooming Chrysanthemum Frieze Panel

A wide band of carved blossom that spills across the panel in full, ruffled bloom. This horizontal frieze centres on three big shaggy flower heads — chrysanthemum or aster-like blooms with dozens of narrow, curling petals — erupting from a dense thicket of feathery acanthus foliage, berry clusters and smaller buds. The composition is roughly symmetrical, tapering from the crowded, high-relief centre out to a pair of neat five-petalled rosettes that cap each end, with leafy tendrils trailing toward the corners. It is designed to run as a long decorative header — over a doorway or bed, across a cabinet frieze or drawer rail, along a fireplace overmantel, or as a standalone carved wall panel above a console. Cut / print notes: • This is deep, busy, undercut-looking relief: rough it out with a larger bit, then take a fine tapered ball-nose finishing pass to pull out the petal layers and berry clusters. • The flower centres are the tallest points — keep them well clear of your stock's top surface so detail is not clipped. • One-sided flat-backed relief; it prints face-up on the bed with no supports and mounts flush to a wall or rail. • Lovely in a warm hardwood like cherry or walnut; a light sand on the petal tips plus a dark glaze in the deep foliage gives that hand-carved, layered look.
