Description

A central plume rising between two great sweeping wings of acanthus — an onlay that seems to lift off the surface it sits on. At the heart of this carving is a tall, ribbed palmette flame, its segments splayed like a fan and tied at the waist with a small collar band. From that waist, two bold acanthus scrolls arc up and out to either side, each rising into a rolled volute capped with a round ball terminal, then dropping back into a lower pair of curled leaf tips. The mirrored curves give the whole piece a winged, almost lyre-like silhouette, with a slim seed-pod drop hanging beneath the centre. It's a versatile crest for the top of a mirror or cabinet, the centre of a headboard, an over-door accent or the keystone spot on a fireplace surround. The open, flowing shape casts lively shadows, so it earns its place as a focal ornament rather than background trim. Cut notes • Carves cleanly in basswood, tulipwood, walnut or oak; a tight, even grain keeps the scroll tips from chipping. • Rough with a ball-nose, then finish the plume ribs, ball terminals and curled tips with a fine tapered ball-nose to hold the crisp edges. • Suits a raised appliqué in the 12–20 mm range; leave a flat back for gluing and mirror the model if you need a matched pair. • Sand the high plume ridges last and ease the delicate leaf tips by hand so nothing snags during finishing.
