Acanthus Urn Pilaster Wall Panel

A tall framed panel where a column of acanthus and wildflowers climbs from an urn like a living pilaster. Set inside a slim rectangular border of beaded egg-and-dart moulding, the centrepiece is a vertical cascade of deeply undercut ornament: curling acanthus leaves, sprays of small blossoms and berry clusters twist upward in a rich, tangled ribbon, all rising from a small footed urn at the very bottom. The relief is high and layered, throwing real shadow, so the foliage looks as though it is growing off the recessed background field. This is a portrait-oriented wall or door panel in the grand classical manner — sized for a cabinet stile, a bed-post-height wall inset, a door centre panel or a framed decorative plaque. It anchors a formal, period interior. Cut notes • The deep undercutting really wants a 3-axis machine with a long finishing pass; a tapered ball-nose of 1/8 inch or finer resolves the leaf overlaps and berry clusters. • Machine the beaded border and the floral field in the same setup to keep them coplanar and the frame crisp. • Choose a stable, tight-grained stock — lime, tulip or a quality MDF — because the fine stems are easy to chip in coarse timber. • Expect meaningful carve time; a roughing pass with a large ball-nose before the detail pass saves hours. • Finish with a dark glaze wiped back off the high leaves to accentuate the depth, or paint and gild for an heirloom look.
