Daisy Rosette Mandorla Onlay

A tall carved medallion where every scroll flows back to a single daisy at its heart. This is a vertical decorative onlay built around a raised central rosette — a plump, twelve-petal daisy sitting inside a smooth disc. From that anchor, deeply undercut acanthus scrolls spiral outward in mirror-image pairs, tapering to tight curls at the crown and tail so the whole piece reads as a long almond or mandorla shape. The relief is generous and rounded rather than shallow, which gives it real shadow when raked light hits the flutes and volutes. It is the kind of appliqué that dresses the centre panel of a wardrobe door, the crest of a headboard, or the top rail of a mirror frame. Cut it in a warm hardwood and it looks period; cut it in MDF and paint it and it turns crisp and modern. Print notes: • Designed for 3-axis CNC carving — a 1/8" or 1/4" ball nose for the roughing, then a fine tapered ball bit for the finishing pass to catch the tight inner curls. • Leave the model flat on the bed; the deepest pockets sit between the scroll arms, so plan a step-down that clears chips cleanly. • If you 3D print it instead, lay it face-up and it prints support-free — the back is flat. • Sand the raised rosette petals last; they are the focal point and take stain unevenly if you rush them.
