Acanthus Scroll Shell Cartouche Onlay

A sweeping Baroque flourish carved to crown a doorway or headboard. This wide, symmetrical onlay centres on a scalloped shell rosette wrapped in a lobed cartouche, from which pairs of deeply-veined acanthus leaves unfurl and scroll outward, tapering into elegant curling tips at each end. A little crest of feathery leaves rises above the centre, balancing the long horizontal sweep. It is a classic centre-and-wings composition meant to sit over the midpoint of a cabinet, mirror or panel. Cut in wood or dense MDF it makes a superb applied moulding for furniture restoration, fireplace surrounds, bed headboards, door casings and picture frames; scaled down it works as a drawer embellishment. The deep, flowing relief throws strong shadows once finished. Cut / print notes • CNC: rough with a large ball-nose, then finish with a fine tapered ball (1–2 mm) to reach into the leaf veins and scroll undercuts. • Mirror-symmetrical, so you can carve one half and flip it for a perfect match if your stock is narrow. • As an STL for resin printing it makes a crisp appliqué — orient face-up and support the back only. • Sand progressively and seal before gilding, liming or a walnut stain to pop the carved depth.
