Description

Delicate, symmetrical scrollwork that opens out like a wrought-iron gate cast in wood. A tiny fluted fan sits at the very top centre, and from it two mirrored streams of ornament flow down and outward. Tight little snail-shell volutes cluster near the middle, then hand off to larger C-scrolls that sweep down and around to enclose a broad open loop at the base, giving the whole piece a heart-shaped or cartouche-like outline. Feathery acanthus fronds flare up from the upper corners to finish the composition. The carving is medium-depth and airy, with plenty of pierced negative space between the scrolls. Think of it as a ready-made flourish for anything that needs softening or a touch of the antique. It glues on beautifully as an onlay at the centre of a cabinet door or drawer front, crowns a mirror or picture frame, tops a headboard, or dresses the apron beneath a shelf. Making notes • Lots of fine, tightly wound scrolls: reach for a small ball-nose and a fine tapered bit, and slow the finishing feed so the spirals stay clean • Because it is an applied onlay, MDF or poplar works well if it will be painted, hardwood if it will be stained • Watch the thin bridges between scrolls; thicken them a touch at small scales so they survive handling • Casts crisply in resin or plaster for repeat production, and pairs naturally with a matching corner set
