Description

A wide, wing-like sweep of baroque foliage, symmetrical and confident. At its centre stands a ribbed shell-shaped palmette, and from beneath it a pair of tight scrolls unfurl outward into long acanthus leaves that curl back on themselves before flicking up at the tips. Below the crest a smaller downward leaf drops like a pendant, balancing the composition top to bottom. Everything mirrors cleanly across the vertical axis, the hallmark of a classic horizontal onlay meant to crown a panel. This is a header piece. It belongs across the top rail of a cabinet or wardrobe, above a doorway or archway, along the apron of a console table, or centred on a headboard where its outstretched leaves fill a long, low space. Mounted on a plain painted panel it instantly adds a period, French-provincial character. Making notes • Ideal for CNC relief carving; rough out with an end mill then detail the scroll eyes and leaf veins with a fine tapered ball-nose. • The undercut curls where leaves roll over themselves are the tricky zones, keep an eye on tool reach or accept a slightly softened lip on a 3-axis machine. • If 3D printing, lay it flat with the carved face up and add a few supports only under the most deeply rolled scroll tips. • Finish with a wash of dark glaze into the recesses to throw the raised veins forward, then wax the high points.
