Description

Two heraldic griffins guard a central boss, wings flung wide in mirror image. This carved relief panel is a symmetrical composition: a pair of eagle-headed, lion-bodied griffins face inward, their hooked beaks and feathered wings sweeping up and back, forelegs stretched toward a domed round boss at the centre. The outer ends resolve into rolling acanthus scrolls capped by little rosette flowers, so the whole piece reads as a long, low horizontal onlay — wider than it is tall, built to run along a header or crest rail. It's a decorative appliqué for furniture and interiors: the crown of a cabinet or headboard, an over-door or fireplace overmantel, or a framed wall plaque. The mythic griffin motif carries that classical, baroque-heraldic weight that suits antique-style joinery. Cut notes • A clean 2.5D relief — machine the field first with a large bit, then detail the feathers, beaks and scrolls with a fine tapered ball-nose. • The feathering and beak undercuts want a small stepover (8–12%) for crisp definition. • Mill in a tight, even-grained hardwood — lime, cherry or maple — so the fine barbs don't tear out. • Printing instead? Lay it flat, boss up, no supports needed; then glue-mount to your panel and finish with gilt cream or a walnut stain.
