Tumbling Roses Vertical Drop Panel

Three full-blown roses tumbling down a slim carved column — a florist's bouquet frozen in wood. This is an upright rectangular panel with softly chamfered corners, carved as a vertical drop. It opens at the top with a scrolled palmette cartouche, then a spray of acanthus foliage spills downward and gives way to a trio of open garden roses, each petal turned and layered so the blooms sit almost fully round off the surface. A long serrated leaf anchors the base. The carving is deep and sculptural in the flower heads while the background stays flat, so the roses genuinely catch shadow. It's made to run vertically: think pilaster faces on a wardrobe or fireplace surround, the stiles of a bed, a stair newel panel, or a tall narrow onlay flanking a mirror. Cutting guidance • This needs real Z-depth for the rose heads, so plan a roughing pass plus a fine finishing pass, and use a long-reach ball-nose to get down between the petals. • A close, forgiving hardwood — lime/basswood, cherry or walnut — carves the layered petals without tear-out. • Machine it face-up and flat; the back is plain, so it glues straight onto joinery. • Leave the overhanging petal edges slightly thick and pare them back by hand afterwards for a crisper undercut. A hand-finish of oil or wax really lifts the depth of the blooms once it's off the machine.
