Trailing Leaf And Scroll Onlay

A long, low branch of carved foliage that arcs across a panel like a windblown vine. This is a horizontal onlay: a slender stem springs from a curled bud at the left, sweeps in a shallow arc to the right, then breaks into a cluster of broad, deeply-veined leaves — some lobed like grape or maple foliage — anchored by two neat spiral volutes. The carving is layered so leaves overlap and lift away from the ground, and the gentle left-to-right flow makes it ideal for running along a rail, drawer front or the head of a door. It is a workhorse decorative element for cabinetmakers and sign carvers: use it as a single accent, or mirror it end-to-end to frame a central motif on a headboard, mantel or cabinet apron. Making notes • Machine it on a 3-axis router with a tapered ballnose finishing pass; run the toolpath along the sweep of the stem so the grain follows the curve. • The leaf tips are the thinnest features — leave a small onion-skin or tab when carving in hardwood so they don't chip off the blank. • 3D printing: lay it flat, relief up, at 0.1mm layers; the veining and spiral scrolls resolve without supports. • Because it is long and slim, check your bed length before slicing, or split it at the central scroll and rejoin after printing. Mirror a second copy and butt the two curled ends together for a symmetrical swag across a wider panel.
