Acanthus Palmette Scroll Onlay

Classical acanthus flourish for anyone dressing up plain timber. This onlay centres on an upright palmette — a fan of ribbed acanthus leaves rising from a small beaded drop — that splits into two mirrored C-scrolls sweeping outward like the crest of a wave. Each scroll tightens into a tidy spiral before trailing off into slender, feathered tendrils, giving the whole piece the low, wide profile of a pediment or over-door cartouche. It is a decorator's workhorse. Glue it above a cabinet door, along a mantel frieze, at the head of a mirror frame, or centred on a headboard to lift flat joinery into something that reads as heirloom furniture. The bilateral symmetry means it sits happily as a single centrepiece or paired nose-to-tail as a running border. The depth is gentle and rounded rather than deeply undercut, so it machines cleanly and sands to a smooth, paint- or gild-ready surface. Print / CNC notes • Cut in hardwood (oak, beech, cherry) for staining, or MDF if you plan to paint or gild. • A 2–3 mm ball-nose bit handles the scroll hollows; follow with a fine tapered bit for the leaf veining. • Machining flat on the bed needs no support; for resin or FDM printing, lay it face-up and the relief prints without overhangs. • Leave a thin flat margin around the edge for clean glue contact when mounting. Scale it to the job — a few centimetres for a jewellery box, or half a metre across for a fireplace surround — and the proportions hold at any size.
