Interlaced Ribbon Fretwork Drop

A slender ribbon of pierced scrollwork, looping and knotting its way down like calligraphy set in wood. This is an open fretwork drop — all line and negative space, no solid ground. A single flowing band interlaces with itself down a tall, narrow axis: a small faceted finial at the top, a diamond eyelet, then a stacked sequence of teardrop loops, heart curls and figure-eight knots that mirror perfectly left to right and taper as they descend. A separate short horizontal scroll accompanies it, meant to sit as a base cap or a matching accent below. Because the piece is cut clean through, whatever sits behind it — glass, painted wall, a contrasting panel — shows through the openings and becomes part of the design. Designers use openwork like this as a fretwork onlay on a glazed cabinet door, an inset in a plain panel, a slim wall-art motif, a decorative bracket, or a repeated accent along a screen or room divider. Print / carve notes • This is a through-cut (pierced) design, not a relief — plan a profiling/cut-out toolpath and leave small holding tabs so parts don't shift on the final pass. • The thin looping sections are fragile in short grain; stable stock like ply, MDF or acrylic holds the delicate curves far better than solid timber. • For 3D printing, lay it flat on the bed so every loop is supported and the thin ribbons print without bridging. • Deburr the cut edges gently; the beauty here is the crisp silhouette, so keep the openings clean.
