Description

A slim classical pilaster with carved leafwork bookending a fluted shaft. This tall, narrow appliqué is pure period joinery. A scrolled acanthus-leaf capital curls at the top, its central bud flanked by rolled volutes, and a matching leaf spray anchors the foot. Between them runs a plain fluted shaft — two deep parallel grooves that draw the eye vertically and lend height to whatever it is fixed to. The whole piece is symmetrical and low-profile, meant to be glued flat onto a surface rather than to stand alone. Cabinetmakers and restorers use onlays like this to dress the stiles of wardrobes and dressers, frame a fireplace surround, or add a columnar accent beside a door or mirror. A mirrored pair flanking a panel looks especially convincing. Cutting notes • Oak, maple or cherry give the cleanest leaf edges; keep the grain running along the length of the shaft. • Use a ball-nose for the rolled acanthus scrolls and a straight or core-box bit for the two flutes. • Cut a left and a right by mirroring the toolpath so pairs sit symmetrically either side of a feature. • Sand the back flat, then glue and clamp; stain to match the host piece before or after fitting.
