Description

A classical column leg crowned with a spray of carved acanthus. This is a slender turned-and-carved column with a lot going on for its size. At the top, a deeply cut acanthus-leaf capital curls forward, its lobed leaves feathered and undercut so they cast real shadow. Below the capital a ringed collar steps down into a long, gently fluted shaft, and that shaft is banded at top and bottom by neat rows of tiny beads. It finishes on a turned ball foot seated on a square plinth carved with a sunflower rosette — a proper base to stand it on. It is the kind of upright that suits a table leg, a newel post, a pilaster, or a mantel/fireplace surround. CNC & print notes • The round shaft is ideal for 4-axis or rotary carving; the acanthus capital needs a fine tapered ball-nose to reach the leaf undercuts. • For a 3-axis machine or an FDM printer, split it into capital, shaft and base and join after — the fluting and beads still read well halved. • Cut from a stable hardwood such as oak or beech for crisp leaf edges. • Sand progressively and finish with oil or wax to bring out the grain along the flutes.
