Celtic Spiral Openwork Basket

Celtic spirals, lifted into three dimensions. This ornament pairs an ancient motif with a sculptural, almost vessel-like form. A domed oval body is pierced with openwork triskele and running-spiral patterns, so light passes right through the interlaced coils. The body stands on short peg feet, and a tall, ribbon-flat handle arches gracefully up and over the top, meeting a spiralled boss at the crown where the loop attaches. The overall effect sits somewhere between a Celtic reliquary basket, a censer and a decorative fruit-bowl ornament. It is a display object first: a mantel or windowsill piece where the cut-through spirals throw pattern onto the surface behind, a trinket or ring holder, a shell for a battery tealight, or a distinctive gift for anyone drawn to Celtic and Iron Age design. The triple-spiral triskele carries a nicely old, talismanic feel without being tied to any one thing. Print notes: • The openwork and the high arching handle are the challenge; orient to keep the handle bridging short and support it from beneath, and add light supports inside the pierced lattice. • Resin renders the fine spiral bands crisply; on FDM, use a small nozzle and slow the perimeters so the cut-outs stay clean. • A bronze or aged-copper paint scheme, then a dark wash pooled into the recesses, really sells the antiqued metal look. • Print a small test of the lattice first to dial in bridging before committing to the full ornament.
