Winged Celtic Knotwork Wall Panel

A single ribbon of Celtic knotwork, opened out wide like a bird caught mid-wingbeat. This panel is built from one continuous interlaced cord that loops through itself into a tight central medallion, then streams outward on both sides into long tapering blade-tips. A small closed loop sits at the very top, so the piece is designed to hang as much as to be inlaid. The symmetry is the draw here: everything mirrors across a vertical axis, with the woven core reading almost like a stylised heart or shield before it splits into those sweeping horizontal arms. It suits a spot that wants a bit of old-world drama without going full gothic — over a doorway, above a bed as a headboard crest, or mounted on a plain hardwood board as standalone wall art. Route it from a close-grained timber (oak, walnut, or hard maple) so the thin crossing strands hold their edges where the cords pass over and under. Because the design is essentially fretwork, plan your bridges and tabs before cutting so nothing floats free. Print notes: • Best carved as a shallow relief; a V-bit brings out the over-under weave crisply. • Watch the pointed wing-tips — leave a touch of extra stock or they can chip on release. • Finish with a dark stain wiped back, or gild the raised cord against a stained recess. • For FDM, print flat, thin walls, and glue to a backer for strength.
