Barley-Twist Acanthus Table Leg

A rope of wood spun tight, dressed with leaves top and bottom. This is a decorative turned-and-carved leg or baluster with a bold barley-twist shaft — a deep spiral rope that runs the full length of the column. The top flares into a small acanthus-leaf capital, just below which a carved drapery swag hangs like a tassel; the bottom swells into an urn-shaped foot wrapped in more acanthus leaves. Square blocks are left at each end (unturned) so the piece can be jointed, screwed, or mounted into a rail or apron. It is exactly the kind of component you'd want for a period table leg, a chair or bed post, a newel post, a heavy staircase spindle, or a decorative pilaster on a cabinet. The rope twist gives it movement and the leaf detail keeps it from looking plain. Print notes: • Ideally cut on a 4-axis / rotary CNC so the barley twist wraps continuously around the shaft; a lathe with an indexing jig also works for the spiral. • On a 3-axis machine you'll need to carve it in halves and glue up, or accept a front-face-only relief. • Keep the square end blocks intact — they are your mounting and clamping surfaces; trim to final length after carving. • The swag and the urn-foot leaves are the finest detail; save a fine ball-nose finishing pass for them, and sand along the twist, not across it.
