Ornate Empire Newel Post

An ornate newel post, part torch, part temple column. This tall turned post stacks one flourish on another from base to tip. It starts on a square panelled plinth with an acanthus leaf spilling over the front of the socle, rises into a slender fluted shaft wrapped with a carved ribbon-and-reed spiral of leaves twisting up its length, swells into a studded orb banded with beading, and finishes in an urn-like fluted finial crowned with a small coronet. The whole thing carries the flavour of a French Empire staircase newel or a decorative interior pillar. It is aimed at stair builders, cabinetmakers and restorers who want a statement upright — a bottom-of-the-flight newel, a hall pillar, a lamp-stand core or a bed-post — and it makes a striking display turning on its own. Print / CNC notes • For a router this is a 4th-axis / rotary-carve model — mount it between centres and run a spiral finishing pass so the wrapped leaf detail stays crisp all the way round. • Printing on FDM? Stand it vertically for the best surface on the flutes; the orb and finial overhangs want light supports, or split the model at the plinth to print in easier sections. • Resin gives the sharpest leaf and bead detail, but check your build height — you will likely print this in two or three stacked segments and pin them together. • Seal and prime before painting; a warm wood stain, or an antique-white with a raw-umber glaze, suits the period styling.
