Turned Acanthus Baluster Spindle

A classic turned baluster dressed with carved leafwork. The render shows a slender vertical spindle in pale wood, squared off into plain mounting blocks at top and bottom and swelling through the middle into a stack of turned profiles. Reading down from the top there is a fluted, gadrooned bulb, a long tapering shaft, a band of sculpted acanthus foliage, then a fuller reeded urn shape and a run of stacked rings and beads before it squares off again. It is a symmetrical, decorative upright with real depth to its carving rather than a plain lathe turning. This is a staple for staircases, porch and deck railings, gallery balustrades and table or furniture legs where a period, hand-carved look is wanted. CNC notes: • Best cut on a 4-axis / rotary setup so the turned and carved detail wraps fully around the blank; a fixed 3-axis run only gives a front face. • A close-grained hardwood like maple, oak or tulipwood holds the acanthus lobes and fine reeding cleanly. • Leave the square end blocks oversize for tenons or fixings, then trim to your rail spacing. • Finish the leaf recesses with a small ball nose and sand the round shaft lightly to knock back facet lines.
