Description

A slender classical column that turns a plain staircase into something architectural. This model is a fully turned and carved column post: a tall, tapering shaft channelled with crisp vertical flutes that draw the eye upward to a small scrolled capital, where paired volutes curl beneath a stylised anthemion. At the foot the form swells into a rounded, urn-like base wrapped in overlapping acanthus leaves and delicate foliate sprays, finished with a ringed collar where shaft meets base. It reads as a piece of period joinery — the sort of detail you would expect on a Georgian staircase or a carved four-poster. Makers use files like this as staircase newel posts, bed and table legs, mantel pilasters or standalone decorative columns for a hallway. Because it is symmetrical in the round, it suits CNC turning and 4-axis carving as well as resin or FDM printing for smaller display versions. Print notes: • Orient upright along the shaft to keep the flutes clean; a raft helps steady the narrow foot. • For CNC, rough with a ball-nose on a rotary axis, then finish the acanthus base at a fine stepover. • Support the undercuts beneath the capital volutes and the leaf tips at the base. • Sand the flutes with a folded strip of paper to preserve their sharp valleys before priming. Scale it down for a shelf ornament or up for full architectural joinery — the geometry holds detail either way, and a warm wood-tone finish or gilt wax brings out the carving.
