Acanthus Turned Baluster Spindle

A slender turned spindle dressed with acanthus leaves and stacked bead turnings. This lathe-and-carve column runs top to bottom as a decorative baluster or furniture leg: square blocks cap each end for jointing, fluted cylindrical shafts flank the middle, and a richly carved midsection sets two cups of upright acanthus leaves around a run of ball, bead and reel turnings. It's symmetrical end to end, so it reads well whichever way up it's fitted. It suits stair balustrades, table and cabinet legs, bed posts, half-columns split for pilaster trim, or repeated rhythmically as porch spindles. Print notes • On a CNC rotary/4th axis, turn the round shafts first, then carve the acanthus and bead detail with a fine ball-nose; MDF and close-grained hardwoods hold the leaf edges best. • To 3D print, either split the column down its length and glue, or print it upright with a brim; resin captures the leaf veining, while FDM handles the turned bands cleanly. • Keep the square end blocks solid and unrounded — they're your glue and joinery surfaces. • Finish along the length, then stain or gild the leaf carving so it lifts clear of the flutes.
