Carved Cabriole Leg With Roses

Old-world cabinetmaking, cut on a modern router. This is a slender cabriole-style furniture leg carved in deep relief, the kind of ornament that turns a plain table or cabinet into an heirloom. The top breaks into a tightly wound volute, a curl of stone-still 'wood shaving', before the profile sweeps down in the classic S-curve of a Queen Anne knee. Down the face spills a naturalistic garland: a full open rose, clustered blossoms and buds, framed by feathered acanthus leaves that ripple with the grain. A smaller scrolled foot finishes the base. Cabinetmakers, restorers and prop builders will recognise it instantly as a knee onlay or a fully sculpted leg blank to face against a chair, console or dressing table. Displayed alone it also works as a vertical wall carving. Print notes • Best carved in close-grained hardwood, cherry, walnut or maple, with the grain running the length of the leg for strength through the thin ankle. • Rough with a large ball-nose, then finish the roses and scrollwork with a 1-2mm tapered ball-nose to reach the undercuts. • Running it on a 3D printer? Orient upright, add light supports beneath the volute overhang, and use it as a master for silicone moulding. • Sand the volute and leaf tips last; they catch the eye and the light.
