Draped Fluted Baluster Column

A turned column caught wearing a carved sash of fabric. The shaft is straight and gently fluted, capped top and bottom by a crisp ring moulding and left square-blocked at each end for joinery. Around its waist wraps a draped swag — folds of cloth gathered and looped, with two pointed tassel-like ends hanging free below the knot. It's a lovely piece of trompe-l'oeil: hard timber pretending, convincingly, to be soft drapery. Think of it as a decorative baluster or half-newel. Use it as a stair spindle, a table or cabinet leg, a pilaster flanking a fireplace, or a standalone furniture post. The squared terminals make it straightforward to socket into rails or a base without extra fitting. Print notes: • Turned forms like this suit a 4th-axis (rotary) CNC beautifully; on a 3-axis machine, cut it in two halves and glue up for a full round. • For 3D printing, stand it upright along the shaft axis for a tall, slim print — or split it lengthwise to skip supports on the swag's overhangs. • The drapery folds carry gentle overhangs; a fine ball-nose or a 0.12 mm layer keeps them soft rather than stepped. • Leave the square blocks slightly oversize if you'll need to trim the spindle to an exact length on site.
