Description

A single elegant flourish, carved to hang vertically like a frozen curl of smoke rising off a fine piece of furniture. L 338 is a tall, one-piece decorative onlay in the classic acanthus idiom. It reads as a slim teardrop at the base that stretches upward into a slender stem, then breaks at the top into a tight, snail-shell scroll. Down the front, a feathered acanthus leaf peels away from the body with deeply undercut veins, catching light along every rib. The reverse is flat, so the whole ornament sits flush against a surface — a cabinet stile, a mirror frame, the crest of a headboard, or the corner of a door panel. This is a decorator's and restorer's part: the sort of applied moulding used to dress plain joinery with a hand-carved look, minus the hand-carving. Pair it with a mirrored copy on the opposite side for a symmetrical set flanking a centre motif. CNC / print notes • Ideal for a 3-axis router in hardwood; rough with a 6 mm end mill, finish with a 2 mm tapered ball-nose to reach into the scroll's eye. • Printing instead? Lay it flat on the back face and it needs almost no support, since the undercuts point upward. • In resin, tilt it slightly so the curled tip cannot trap uncured liquid. • It fills and paints beautifully — a coat of gesso before gilding wax gives a convincing antique giltwood finish.
