Grapevine Spiral Newel Column

A twisting vine-wrapped column that turns a plain post into a showpiece. This is a decorative turned-and-carved column with a barber-pole spiral of flutes winding up its length, overlaid at intervals with heavy clusters of grapes, curling tendrils and broad vine leaves. The spiral keeps the shaft in constant movement, while the grape bunches sit proud in high relief, catching light and shadow along the twist. Both ends narrow slightly so it can butt neatly against a cap or base. It is designed for staircase newels and balusters, table and furniture legs, fireplace surround pilasters, bar fronts or any decorative post that could use an Old-World, vineyard-and-tavern feel. CNC notes: • Ideal for a 4th-axis rotary setup, carving the full cylinder in a single wrap-around pass. • No rotary axis? Split the model down the centre, machine two half-columns on a 3-axis, then glue back-to-back and clean the seam. • Work in a solid hardwood — oak, ash or walnut — so the grape clusters and leaf edges survive handling. • Rough with a large ball-nose, finish with a small ball-nose at a fine stepover, then hand-sand the raised fruit to knock off fuzz before staining. Stain and wax it to warm up the vine detail, or paint and gild the grapes for a richer decorative piece.
