Description

A baroque column capital dripping with carved fruit, leaves and fleur-de-lis. This is a fully three-dimensional decorative column top — the flared, cup-shaped crown of a classical pilaster or newel post, not a flat panel. The upper bowl is wrapped in a band of pendant acanthus foliage above a ring of stylised egg-and-tongue and beading. Below it the shaft is framed by twin rope-twist mouldings running vertically, and the central face carries a hanging swag: a burst of acanthus leaf, a heavy grape cluster, and a crowned fleur-de-lis medallion near the base. The whole thing sits on a stepped, cloverleaf plinth. Carved in hardwood it belongs on a staircase newel, a fireplace surround, a bar counter leg or a piece of statement furniture; scaled down it makes a rich resin ornament or a table-lamp base. Cut & finish notes • Best suited to 4-axis / rotary CNC work so the mouldings wrap cleanly around all four faces — a flat 3-axis pass will only capture the front. • Rough out with a large ball-nose, then finish the acanthus and grape detail with a fine tapered ball bit; the undercuts beneath the leaves are the tricky part. • Oak, walnut and tulipwood all suit the deep relief; a dark wax or oil in the recesses makes the carving pop. • If you 3D print it instead, orient it vertically and add internal supports under the overhanging foliage.
