Scrolled Acanthus Corbel Bracket

A single sweeping S-curve of carved acanthus that turns a plain shelf edge into something architectural. The piece reads as one continuous gesture: a small square mounting cap crowns the top, a tight volute curls off the upper shoulder, and a fan of layered acanthus leaves spills down the front before the whole form tapers into a fat spiral scroll at the toe. The rear face is flat for flush wall or cabinet fixing, while the front is fully modelled with deep, confident flutes that catch a raking light beautifully. This is a decorative corbel in the classical furniture-maker's idiom, at home under kitchen island overhangs, beside range-hood returns, as a mantel support or simply carrying a floating hardwood shelf. It gives a run of joinery that hand-carved, period feel without anyone ever touching a gouge. Cut it as a matched mirrored pair for symmetrical installs, or scale the single file up for a statement bracket. Cut notes • Machine on a 3-axis router with a tapered ball-nose for the finishing pass; the leaf undercuts respond well to a 45-degree V-bit on the detail pass. • Lime, tulipwood, pine or MDF all carve cleanly here; softer stock keeps the volutes crisp. • Leave the flat back untouched as a ready gluing surface, and sand the scroll tips by hand where the tool cannot reach. • Seal end-grain before priming if you plan to paint it a coordinating trim colour.
