Neoclassical Tapered Pilaster Leg

A slender neoclassical leg that tapers like a candle flame, crowned with a scrolled capital. What you are looking at is a carved tapered furniture leg, or pilaster. Up top sits a stepped square plinth block; just beneath it, a small capital with paired volute scrolls and a little palmette fan. From there a long, four-sided shaft tapers all the way down to a neat squared toe. The front face carries a shallow drop panel — a symmetrical anthemion crest feeding into a descending bellflower husk, that classic Georgian, Adam-style cascade. Carve four to a matching set for a console, side table or writing desk; use singly as a fireplace-surround pilaster, a bed-post accent, or an applied half-leg against a cabinet end. Elegant, restrained and unmistakably period. Because it is long and detailed, plan the fabrication carefully: • On CNC, a 4th-axis or rotary setup carves it in the round; on a 3-axis, machine the ornamented front and sides then join, or run it as a half-round appliqué. • The front carving is shallow enough for a 2mm ballnose finishing pass. • 3D printing: stand it upright or split into segments; resin gives the crispest scrolls, with light supports under the volute undercuts. • Great in oak, beech or tulipwood; prime well if you intend to paint it a soft chalk white.
