Acanthus Urn Baluster Post

A turned baluster crowned with an acanthus-wrapped urn at its foot. This is a tall, elegant baluster — equally usable as a newel post, table leg or bedpost blank — built from stacked classical elements. From the top down: a plain round dowel tenon, a ringed collar, then a long fluted column of fine vertical reeds. A swollen, urn-like knop interrupts the shaft midway; below it the fluting resumes before flaring into the showpiece, a bulbous vase-shaped foot carved with overlapping acanthus leaves and set on a stepped, turned base. The whole form is balanced, symmetrical and thoroughly traditional. Worth knowing: this is a full three-dimensional turned form, not a flat panel — it's designed to be worked in the round. CNC / print notes • Ideal for a lathe or a 4th-axis / rotary CNC setup; the fluting and leaf carving suit a rotary-axis toolpath, while the vase foot rewards a fine finishing pass. • Turn from a straight-grained hardwood such as beech, oak or ash for structural legs and balusters; softer woods carve the acanthus more easily but bruise. • If 3D printing, orient it vertically along the print axis and add a brim; expect to support the acanthus-leaf overhangs and the underside of the knop. • Turn or print it as a matched set for a staircase run or a table, and size the tenon to fit your own joinery.
