Cascading Acanthus Furniture Leg

A cascade of carved acanthus leaves flowing down a tapered post. This is a classical furniture element, most likely a decorative table or cabinet leg — or a newel-post drop — rather than a flat panel. It begins as a slim turned shaft at the top, then swells into a teardrop of deeply undercut acanthus foliage. The leaves fold and curl in overlapping tiers, each with a crisp central spine and fluted channels running outward, so light rakes across the piece and throws every fold into shadow. It is symmetrical, front-facing and unashamedly ornate, in the Victorian and French-classical tradition of carved cabinetry. Designers and makers will use it as a machined leg on a console or side table, a corbel-style bracket, a mantel or stair detail, or a mould master for casting repeats. The generous relief depth means it reads beautifully even from across a room. CNC-cut notes: • This wants a 3D/relief carve, not a 2D profile. Rough out with a larger ballnose, then finish the leaf channels with a fine tapered ballnose for clean fillets. • Tight, deeply undercut foliage benefits from a 4th-axis or two-sided setup; on a 3-axis machine, accept slightly softened undercuts or split the model. • Straight-grained hardwood (oak, walnut, tulipwood, maple) carves the sharpest leaf tips; go slower on the finishing pass to avoid tear-out. • Sand progressively and finish with oil or wax to pull out the grain and deepen the shadow lines. It also prints cleanly in resin for a decor prototype.
