Draped Fluted Doric Column

A classical column caught mid-bow beneath a sweep of carved cloth. Despite the CNC filing, this is a fully three-dimensional turned-and-carved column: a fluted Doric-style shaft crowned with a lotus-bud finial and standing on a stacked, ringed base. What lifts it above an ordinary baluster is the drapery, a length of fabric slung over the capital and cascading down one side in deep, believable folds that pool toward the foot. The contrast of crisp vertical flutes against soft falling cloth is the whole charm of the piece. It suits a decorative newel post, a furniture leg or pilaster, a lamp or clock body, or simply a sculptural centrepiece milled in hardwood. At smaller scale it prints beautifully as a display column. Cut & print notes: • For CNC, a 4-axis or rotary setup handles the full round best; on a 3-axis machine, mill front and back halves and glue. • In hardwood, oak or lime/basswood carve cleanly; use a fine ball-nose for the flute valleys and drapery folds. • 3D printing instead? Stand it upright and resin-print for the sharpest fold detail, or FDM with light supports under the overhanging cloth. • Sand the flutes with a contoured block to keep them even before finishing or gilding.
