Baroque Acanthus Newel Post

An ornate carved post that turns a staircase or table leg into a centrepiece. This is a decorative carved upright — a newel post or heavy furniture leg — tapering from a broad sculpted foot to a scrolled volute cap at the top. The face is worked in flowing baroque acanthus: deep overlapping leaf blades and rolled scrolls spiralling up the shaft in a liquid, almost windswept rhythm. A squared collar near the top gives a clean joinery point, while the whole form reads as one continuous flourish of leaf and curl. It's built for CNC carving in hardwood (oak, walnut, maple) or dense PU tooling board, and suits staircase newels, bed and table posts, mantel pilasters or standalone ornament. Printed in resin or PLA it also serves as a scaled architectural model or a decorative finial. Cut / print notes • 3D relief carving: rough with a large ballnose, then finish with a 2–3 mm tapered ballnose for the deep leaf undercuts. • Mind the undercuts on the scrolls — a 4th axis or flip-cut gives cleaner backs than a single 3-axis pass. • Run the grain along the length to reduce tear-out on the long flutes. • For 3D printing, orient vertically and slice at 0.12 mm; light sanding then primer lifts the leaf edges before staining or gilding.
