Description

A carved newel post with a grapevine winding up its fluted shaft. The turned column runs from a flared, ringed foot up through a slender reeded body to a square top block, and the whole piece is crowned by a plump acanthus-and-bud finial that looks like an unfurling artichoke. Down one face, a relief of grape leaves and twisting tendrils climbs across the vertical flutes, breaking up the geometry with something organic and hand-carved in feel. Rendered in a warm stone-and-timber tone, it has the presence of a classic staircase upright. Joiners and restorers will recognise it as a newel or baluster; it also works as a bed post, a gate pier cap or a standalone decorative turning for a hallway. Cut notes: • Best suited to a 4-axis / rotary CNC so the flutes and the vine wrap continuously around the shaft. • Turn the blank oversize in a stable hardwood — oak, beech or ash — then let the finishing pass define the leaf detail. • If printing instead, orient it vertically and add a brim; light supports will be needed under the finial's undercuts. • Finish with oil or wax to sink into the fluting and lift the carved vine.
