Acanthus-Carved Turned Baluster Spindle

A turned column dressed with acanthus — where woodturning meets the carving chisel. This is a slender decorative baluster, symmetrical top to bottom around a central bead. Each end flares into a stacked series of turned rings and an egg-and-dart collar, while the two swollen sections in the middle carry acanthus foliage — long, feathered fronds that curl over the belly of each swell and drop into a scrolled tip. The proportions read as a staircase spindle, a bed or table post, or a furniture leg, and the mirror symmetry means it looks right whichever way up it is mounted. The turned profile is smooth and classical; the carved leaves add just enough ornament to lift it above a plain lathe blank. Ideal for restoration work, bespoke furniture, staircase balustrades, or as a repeatable ornamental leg in a matched set. It also slices well for resin printing as decor. • On a router, rough the turned profile first, then run a fine ball-nose for the leaf detail. • Grain-friendly hardwoods (oak, beech, maple) take the fine acanthus cuts best. • Symmetrical model — mirror or repeat it down a run of balusters without re-orienting.
