Description

A classical spindle that carries flutes and foliage from cap to foot. This turned-and-carved baluster runs from a square top block down through a long, gently tapering shaft grooved with clean vertical flutes. At its waist a carved collar of acanthus leaves wraps a small urn, and below that a second fluted, vase-shaped swelling steps down to a square plinth foot ready to seat on a rail or floor. The proportions are traditional joinery, equally at home on a staircase, a porch, or a substantial piece of furniture. Use it as a stair baluster or newel, a porch post, a bed or table leg, or to replace a broken spindle in an older run. Print notes • A 4-axis rotary CNC carves this in one setup; otherwise split it front-to-back and glue after machining. • Choose a tight-grained hardwood, oak, beech or sapele, so the flute arrises and leaf tips stay crisp. • Rough with a bull-nose, finish the flutes and acanthus with a small ball-nose, and leave the square blocks un-turned for clean joints. • Sand along the grain and match the profile diameter to your existing balusters before you batch a full flight.
