Acanthus Scroll Cabriole Leg

An S-curved cabriole leg dressed in acanthus scrolls, top and bottom. This is a carved furniture leg — a slender, sinuous baluster that swells and tapers through a long S-curve, capped by a turned collar at the top and a small turned foot at the base. A crisp volute scroll curls at the shoulder just below the collar, its tail feathering into a leaf that runs down the shaft, and the motif is echoed by a second scroll-and-leaf flourish rising off the foot. It is classic French, Louis-style cabinetry ornament — the kind of leg that belongs under a console table, vanity, side cabinet or upholstered stool. The carving sits proud on the front face while the sides stay clean, so it reads as a show-front leg meant to be seen from the room. CNC notes: • The deep S-profile is easiest on a 4-axis (rotary) setup; on 3-axis, machine the front relief and blend the sides, or split and laminate two halves. • Reach for a fine tapered ball-nose on the finishing pass — the tight spiral eyes of the volutes need a small enough tool to define their centres. • Cut in a stable hardwood (oak, beech, mahogany or walnut) so the slim ankle just above the foot survives handling and assembly. • These are almost always wanted as a set of four, so mirror the scroll for left/right pairs and leave square mounting blocks at the top for joinery.
