Description

A slender classical drop, capped top and bottom with unfurling acanthus scrolls. This is a vertical decorative onlay in the traditional cabinetmaker's style. A reeded central shaft runs the length of the piece, its parallel flutes framed by a tight scrolled volute at each end, from which carved acanthus leaves curl outward like breaking waves. The symmetry reads as a matched pair terminal, ideal where you want to draw the eye up a stile or down a pilaster. Carve it as an applied ornament for cabinet doors, wardrobe stiles, a fireplace surround, bed posts or the flanks of a mantel clock. Because the motif is mirror-friendly, cutting two and flipping one gives you a balanced left/right set on either side of a panel. CNC notes • A tight-grained hardwood (beech, cherry, tulipwood) or dense MDF holds the fine leaf tips best. • Rough with a ball-nose, then finish the scroll undercuts and reed valleys with a fine tapered ball for clean shadows. • Keep the back face flat so it glues down as an onlay; a couple of pin holes help clamp-up alignment. • Sand the flutes with a folded profile block and seal before staining so the leaf detail doesn't blotch. At a couple of hundred millimetres tall it suits most furniture; scale the width to match your stile before cutting.
