Description

A mechanism laid bare — the humble ball bearing, rendered as a clean display model. This is a skeletal, cage-free bearing: a broad outer race, a chunky inner race, and a ring of eight spheres nested in the gap between them. With no shields or seals hiding the works, you see exactly how the balls roll between the two tracks, which makes it as much a teaching aid as a print. The rounded, polished forms catch light beautifully and read as machined metal even in plain filament. It suits engineering students, classroom demos, fidget-toy tinkerers and desk-toy makers who want a working mechanism straight off the plate. Scaled up it's a satisfying oversized model of something we normally never see inside. Print notes • Best printed in place: keep roughly 0.3–0.4 mm clearance between the balls and races so it spins free once cleaned. • Go slow with a low layer height (0.12–0.16 mm) so the spheres stay round and don't fuse to the tracks. • Calibrate your printer's tolerances first with a test gap; a hair too tight and it seizes, too loose and it rattles. • For a metallic finish, print in silk or metal-fill filament, then gently work the bearing loose and wipe the tracks clean before the first spin.
