Radiant Sun-Face Sunburst Medallion

A grinning solar face glows at the heart of a crown of licking flames. This CNC relief carves a classic sun-face medallion: a softly modelled human face — heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose and a small pointed flourish beneath the mouth — set inside a smooth recessed disc. That inner disc is framed by a beaded ring studded with tiny rosettes and little scroll motifs, and the whole piece bursts outward into two staggered tiers of tapering, wavy flame-rays that ripple like solar prominences. It reads beautifully at scale on a wall, over a door, or above a fireplace, and the alternating short and long rays throw dramatic shadows under raking light. Equally at home cut in oak for a rustic hallway or in dark walnut for a study, it suits anyone drawn to celestial, folk or Renaissance-garden motifs. Cut notes • Cut on a 3-axis router with a tapered ball-nose bit for the flowing face and ray transitions; a smaller detail pass tidies the rosette ring. • The pointed ray tips are fragile — leave them slightly blunt in the toolpath or hand-finish to avoid tear-out on end grain. • A depth of roughly 12–20 mm gives the face real dimensionality; scale the disc so the eyes and nose keep enough material to model smoothly. • Sand the raised face, then rub a dark wax or gilt cream into the recesses to make the smile and flame shadows pop.
