Rose Vine Heart Keepsake Tray

A heart carved into a soft-cornered tablet, wreathed in climbing roses and leaves. The design sinks a full heart shape into a rounded rectangular block, and inside that recess a low-relief spray of foliage does the work: slender rose stems arch up from the point, budding blooms open along the lower curve, and delicate leaves and tendrils fill the shoulders in gentle, even relief. The carving is shallow and tactile rather than deep and dramatic — the kind of surface you want to run a thumb across. Because the heart is countersunk below the surrounding rim, the piece doubles happily as a shallow catch-all tray: a landing spot for a wedding band, keys by the door, or coins on a dresser. Equally it hangs as a romantic wall token. It reads as a Valentine's, engagement or anniversary gift, or a wedding ring-bearer's dish. Machining notes • Rough with a 6mm end-mill, then finish the leaf veining with a fine tapered ball-nose or a 30-degree V-bit for the sharpest tendrils. • Fine-grained hardwood such as cherry, maple or beech holds the small rosebuds without fuzzing. • Keep the recess pocketing shallow so the floral relief stays proud of the tray floor. • A wax or oil finish rubbed back off the high points darkens the recesses and makes the roses pop. • Felt the underside if you intend it as a tray on polished furniture.
