Faceted Star Rosette Furniture Appliqué

A little jewel of an ornament for cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This landscape-format appliqué centres on a domed roundel carved with a crisp eight-point faceted star, its chiselled facets meeting at a bright central point and ringed by a tidy band of beading. Flanking the roundel, two mirrored clusters of plump, gouge-carved petals or acanthus lobes sweep outward, and the whole plaque is bounded by an elegant wavy, scalloped edge that comes to soft points top and bottom. It reads as traditional cabinetmaker's ornament, warm and hand-carved in feel. Use it to dress up furniture: glue it onto cupboard doors, headboards, mantels, mirror frames or clock cases, or repeat it as a rhythmic frieze along a rail. Cut / carve notes • A close-grained hardwood such as beech, cherry or lime takes the beading and faceted star far more cleanly than open-grained oak. • V-bit carve the star facets so the ridges stay razor sharp, and use a small ball-nose for the rounded petal lobes and the bead ring. • Leave a flat back and a thin border margin for easy gluing and clamping onto the host piece. • Blend into surrounding trim with a matching stain, or gild the star for a period-furniture accent.
